Rules: Hold larger (sanctioned) events here No lounging Walk around not through  “Forbidden” Discussion:      The rules for this place are made for shared human made space and I think that brings with it a different set of expectations. Built environments such as these have multiple uses at different times and events going on. During events this place brings people together in a large social setting because of that we believe the rules such as walk around if not staying. You always need to respect the human need for entertainment and to not interrupt that. Along with the respect of attendees we need to respect those performing. Depending which kind of performance is going on we need to stand to show we are paying attention and respect the performer. This can also hinder others' view of what is going on. During non-event times rules shift a little bit to a more calming area.

Class Gateway

Rules: Use as a recruitment site for student organizations Do not stand or block the gateway  Pictures allowed Discussion:      The class gateway is one of the most accessible places on campus and is important to a student's time when they arrive and when they graduate from the university. Its proximity to campus as well as uptown makes it one of the busiest spots on campus and becomes an easy way to reach students and faculty at Ohio University. Many organizations use that space as a recruitment space or asking passersby to help with fundraising. It is an easy place to catch people’s attention when they are walking by. With the traffic of people, one important rule is to stand out of the way of people walking through uptown or other places on campus if you are stopping to talk with others.

Sidewalk

Rules:  Walk bikes No scooters or skateboards Walk on your correct side Move with a purpose (don't wander) Don't take up the whole sidewalk  Walk in pairs or groups at night Discussion:  This set of rules was created out of respect for campus property and those walking through campus. The socially constructed rules are important because they create a foundation for common courtesy amongst those walking on the sidewalk. Walking on the right side of the sidewalk  is an important rule because it allows for foot traffic to progress without causing any disruptions in the flow of foot traffic. Sidewalks are designed as a form of passage between different locations and obstructions such as taking up the entire width of the sidewalk and wandering aimlessly to distract from those trying to reach their destination.  The walking of bikes and scooters or carrying of skateboards prevents any incidents and allows everybody to travel at the same pace. The rules created mainly ...

Statue and Other Sitting Areas

Image
Rules: Eating allowed  No vandalism  Use as an easily recognizable meet up place  Be respectful of others depending on noise level and crowdedness Chat and lounge space rather than a place for physical activities Discussion:   The set of rules for the statue and concrete sitting areas is important because it demonstrates what is considered to be socially acceptable in these areas. The area serves as a meeting point, and as a place to casually interact with others and eat. Along with general College Green rules, it is understood to not vandalize or disrespect the statue and surrounding areas, as well as being respectful to people in the area. Individuals are able to go to the statue  and stay, creating a spatial claim of the space. The rules are expressed by those who go to the statue on College Green. Individuals can see students eating or having a conversation with their peers. The statue is not a heavily populated area and most people don’t take up ...
